The economy is heavily dependent on agriculture, which accounts for half of GDP, provides 85% of exports, and employs 90% of the workforce. Prolonged drought during the early years of the 21st century has severely reduced electricity generation capacity. During 2006 Tanzania suffered a crippling series of "load-shedding" or power rationing because of the shortfall of generated power, largely because of insufficient hydro-electric generation.
