Problems in Uganda: The vicious and cult-like Lord's Resistance Army (LRA), which seeks to overthrow the Ugandan Government, has murdered and kidnapped civilians in the north and east since 1986. Although the LRA does not threaten the stability of the government, LRA violence at one time displaced up to 1.7 million people, creating a humanitarian catastrophe. Uganda has an extremely low life expectancy rate of 45.3 years.

With direction from Action for Empowerment (AOET) and their founder/director Sam Tushabe, Assist International helped build an 14-home family village in Jinja where the orphaned children can enjoy a happy childhood. Jinja is located at the head waters of the Nile River.

Assist International also partnered with AOET in the building of a new school for the children of the village and the surrounding area. The new facility has seven classrooms, an administrative suite and a large children's computer center. The school will handle 360 students for the first year and in 2008 they hope to build a Kindergarten and boarding section that can take care of 540 children. The School is now fully licensed by the Ministry of Education and Sports in the Republic of Uganda, fully operational and a very vibrant place!

In January 2007, Assist International sent a medical team to do a great project at the St. Francis Hospital in Nkokonjeru, Uganda. The hospital now has an Intensive Care/Critical Care Room.

This video, shot by Assist International Volunteer Jim Stunkel, chronicles the journey of Vintage Faith Church of Santa Cruz to Uganda, where they participated in building homes for vulnerable children and women.

One of our partner agencies, PATH Ministries, led by the amazing team of Bob and Carol Higgins, works in the northern Uganda region surrounding LIRA. They created the Otino Waa Children's Village and school for these incredibly sweet children. To learn more about their work, please visit www.pathministries.net and consider sponsoring a child.
