Aba Island Hospital Project - Aba Island, Sudan

Date of Project: March 2013

Description: Providing equipment and training for the Aba Island Hospital Intensive Care Unit and Surgical Unit.

Details: The Aba Island Hospital is located about 250 km south of Khartoum and is the only health facility on the island that has a population of 100,000. The hospital serves a total population of 403,000 that includes both island inhabitants and those in the surrounding areas. The White Nile State Ministry of Health is developing a cardiac program for that region and asked Assist International to help in this endeavor. The nearest facility that can provide cardiac care is 4 hours away. Assist agreed to provide medical equipment and training. The equipment includes an 8-bed patient monitoring system with central station, a cardiac ultrasound, surgical equipment including an anesthesia machine, surgical tables, surgical lights, and also monitors for the post-operative unit.

This will be Assist's third major medical project in Sudan. Previously, Assist has donated and installed patient monitors, ventilators, and infant care products in the Pediatric ICU of the Omdurman Pediatric Emergency Hospital. It also provided a 12-bed patient monitoring system for the Cardiac Care Unit at the Omdurman Teaching Hospital. A team of medical volunteers from the USA installed the medical equipment and provided training to the hospital staff.

OTHER CRITICAL AREAS FOR ASSIST INTERNATIONAL:

Advanced Medical

We do this important work around the world regardless of politics, religion or culture. The factors that motivate us are need and sustainability. Assist procures and installs the equipment (ICU/CCU/NICU monitoring with central station, step-down unit monitors, ultrasound, x-ray, etc.), trains both the medical and biomedical personnel, brings all the consumables needed for the first year of operation and warranties all equipment for a full year. Assist International works with great medical partners (GE, Salinas Valley Memorial Health Care System, Philips, Stanford University Hospital, etc.) in procuring, installing, training and maintaining the life-saving equipment which is given to hospitals providing critical care.

Orphaned & Abandoned Children

Our scope of activity includes partnering with non-government organizations (NGO’s) who are meeting the needs and giving a future to the most vulnerable among us. Romania, Thailand, Uganda, Kenya and Mali are among the nations where we have come alongside to “assist” in lifting NGO’s to the next level of capacity and sustainability. Our partners include those working in internally displaced persons (IDP) camps, with former child soldiers and those victimized by HIV/AIDS. Our construction projects have been an integral part of capacity expansion by providing housing for orphaned and abandoned children as well as school buildings and medical facilities which touch the entire population of a region and become effective and far reaching allies in the fight against HIV/AIDS.

Life-Giving Water & Infrastructure

Life is impossible without water and perilous without a clean and drought-proof source. Assist provides families, villages and hospitals with the capacity to access and store this essential element of life in a wide variety of settings and nations. Stable electrical power is another strategic element which brings immediate benefit and future capacity. We have completed a number of power projects which have enabled schools, hospitals, orphanages and villages to radically increase their effectiveness and outreach. Hospital renovation is another of our essential activities which expand the capacity of national healthcare systems to meet the needs of the people.

Education & Empowerment

Empowering people is an integral part of Assist's assignment in our world. More than a hand-out these endeavors offer a hand-up in practical, long-term and life changing ways. Gaining marketable skills, breaking the cycle of illiteracy and/or receiving a micro-loan are activities which transform families and generations. Our work with partners in places like Darfur and Uganda are meeting this great need. The "assist" we provide allows them to expand their capacities and geometrically increase the number of people and families they empower to live beyond mere existence.
