Family Style Villages
The Family Style Empowerment Village is designed to rescue orphaned and vulnerable children (OVC) from the danger of the streets and abuse of indentured servant hood to unscrupulous extended family by placing them in a newly assembled family with a mother and a father. These new families become family in every way.
Working from the premise that a healthy, fully functioning society is made up of many healthy, fully functioning families, Assist designs its care to center around strengthening the family unit so that it can achieve sustainability. We believe that children raised in a loving, nurturing home by parents who work daily to provide for their material, emotional, educational, and spiritual needs, will turn away from hand outs and embrace a model of self sustainability.
The parents are trained and educated on parenting children that have suffered great loss. The homes are monitored by social workers to make sure that the child is thriving and doing well in their new family. The clustered approach to building these Empowerment Villages allows for the safety of a close knit neighborhood while maintaining the autonomy of the family structure.
Assist has worked with NGO partners in Romania and Uganda in developing and building sustainable Family Style Villages since 1990.
